"FOR WHITE WOMEN ONLY"

Rooms Fall Apart: A Serious Play

My Visitors

The Vibe

When I sparked this journey, my intention was to confront the manner in which Black Women have painstakingly assimilated to a euro-centric standard of beauty perception. And while in some situations this remains to be true, a more profound realization became hallelujah clear. Black Is Beauty. Not through our shades, but by our Blackness alone. And everybody knows it. Except us.

Both the Arab cab driver that bowed at my feet, and the little black girl who excitedly proclaimed to her mother "OOOHHH Mommy!! I wanna be Black like her when I grow up!" knew my ancient truth without me having to articulate it....that GOD is Black, and Woman.

Rooms Fall Apart Art

Rooms Fall Apart: A Serious Play really wasn't a "play" at all. Over 20 artists were given over 20 rooms to recreate inside Maryland Art Place with the intention of reshaping a persons reality for 5 minutes. A crawling exhibition guided by "snatchers. These theatrical tour guides seperate the audience (50-100 people per show) into several small groups and lead them all on a, somtimes uncomfortable sometimes hysterical,, performance art exhibition via various pathways. No 2 groups travel the same path, or visit 100% of the rooms. The series of shows ran 10 times over a 2 week period in April 2013.

My Experience

"For White Women Only" emerses its voyuers in the multi-sensorial exploration of being a Black Woman in the 21st Century, surrounded by white women. This interactive exhibit is an amalgamation of time, class, generations, and choices; to bleach, or not to bleach....to inject, or to weave....to listen to Nina or Nikki.
