From Niggas To Gods

From Niggas To Gods, a multi-media performance art exhibition was held in Baltimore MD at the end of March. Hosted by Radio One On-Air Personality Civ Jones, #FNTG featured several musical acts from Baltimore and Philly including a unique performance piece and light installation created by I.

Let’s discuss Brick by Brick. Those in attendance received a gold "brick" upon entry. With a single word on one side and a graphic image on the other, attendees were each instructed to present their brick to Black Shesus.

Thank you to both my real life and Facebook friends (Ericka Bridgeford, Dana Lee, Drisana McDaniel to name a few) for contributing key vocabulary in connection to Niggas and God. This was an important exercise and shaped the initial philosophy that accompanied my work.

On the surface, the vibration of the "Nigga" vocab was much lower than that of God’s. Makes since, most people identify with a God that’s beautiful, merciful, all loving, all knowing and then angrily curse God when our life’s process lands us in an undesirable place. Whether it’s the loss of a loved one or a loved thing, when life gets dark, we often turn God into a Nigga. And like "God", when WE (Black people) are achieving, voting, prospering we’re proud African-Americans….when we aren’t…we’re Niggas.

It was my intention to explore the intersection of this idea.

There were certain phrases that were magical.

There were certain phrases that were fragmented.

The lights were beautiful….and so were the people.

No woman is an island. Najaa, if it wasn't for your focus and dedication to all things artistic I honestly would've gone off...MUCH MUCH sooner than I did. You stepped in, stepped to the plate, and assisted me with the highest level of professionalism and care. If anyone ever says "Good help is hard to find", my reply will now be, "Not if you have FaceBook friends like mine!" #BGM

With over 100 people in attendance, of course,

there were tons of #ShesusSelfies.

Were you there?

Scroll through, share, and HASHTAG your #ShesusSelfie along with your experience.

I'd love to know.

Certain elements will be discussed in greater detail over time.)
