When I sparked this journey, my intention was to confront the manner in which Black Women have painstakingly assimilated to a euro-centric standard of beauty perception. And while in some situations this remains to be true, a more profound realization became hallelujah clear. Black Is Beauty. Not through our shades, but by our Blackness alone. In the vast world of performance art there remains a void in the representation of Woman…The African-American Woman. Our story has been misinterpreted simply because it has yet to be shared by enough of us, creatively, on our terms and uncensored. It is my intention to share that story. My story. And how the shaping of my beauty constructs have been manipulated by society. Using multi-medium performance disciplines, I fuse elements of African Royalty, Womanism, and Hip Hop Culture into large scale space specific performance installations that anchor extremely uncomfortable conversations between one Black Woman and the rest of the world.
Love,
B
